After years of online and private events, we finally took the plunge and held our first public event which would be a guided tasting through some Irish whiskey classics along with some newer expressions.
We had no idea whether the event would be a success. It's one thing to host a private event with a captive audience and another entirely to book a bar for an evening and put on an event for the general public. Armed with the support of Páraic at Browne's Bar and a bunch of whiskies under our arms, we set ourselves up and met the attendees.
Around 25 of us gathered in the lounge; from the curious to those beginning their whiskey journey to experienced tasters, we met and chatted about all things whiskey. We kicked the evening off with a glass of Jameson followed by a guided tasting through Dingle Single Malt and Glendalough Double Barrel expressions before taking a break. Our second half included tastings of Powers Three Swallows, Green Spot and Redbreast 12 year old.
Our surprise of the evening was a bottle of Bold'98, a whiskey that pays homage to the Wexford rebellion of 1798 - no better way to round off our inaugural public event in Gorey
Alongside the tastings, we explored how to taste whiskies, how whiskey is made and a brief history of whiskey with a particular focus on Irish whiskies. After our event, the group hung out for a few pints and the enthusiasm for whiskey within the group was really something. Feedback from attendees and the bar was great and we really enjoyed hosting the event.
